My name is Leanora Sutter, and I am 12 years old.I live in a small town in vermont. Recently my mother passed away so now its just me and my daddy. A lot of people dont like me and my daddy, because we are a different color, but he tells me its been like this and its not going to stop anytime soon. I go to school and these boys pick on me telling me my daddy is going to be killed by some men, and I may be too. That makes me not want to go to the school because those boys really bother me. My daddy tells me I need an education and thats gonna make me smarter than them boys.
I met a little girl by the name of Esther Hirsh, she isn't very welcomed in this town either, because she is jewish. She was adopted by by a lady named Sara. She welcomed me into her home one rainy day and gave me a blannket. She is a really nice girl. She told me her daddy was killed and they never found killed him. We are good friends and we stick together.
My daddy and Reverend Reeves tell me that the Ku Klux Klan is trying to do something in our town. They tell me that they're a group that doesnt like certain groups of people, and I happen to be in one of those groups, Esther too. They are trying to get people to join the klan. My daddy makes sure we dont go out at night, because they are always out at the time. Reverend Reeves trys to assemble meetings with both white and black people to warn them about the klan.
A lot of people are scared of the klan. Recently Esther's foster dad was shot at. I spend a lot of time there and me and Esther read books, and play in her room. We talk to eachother about school, and that we dont really like living here. My daddy came home one night to pick me up from Esthers house and seemed upset. He told me a good friend of his keeps getting threatened by those men. My daddy saw them pull up in a truck and try to get him.
I dont really want to live here anymore. The town hasnt been the same since those men started coming here. Im starting to see different sides of people like Iris Weaver, and Reverend. Some are trying real hard to save us from the klan and others are turning on us to join them, it's strange.
